Smoothies are an easy, portable way to get abundant nutrition. They make a great meal replacement, and come together very quickly. Simply put, they are a great option for The Kaufmann Diet.
There are some staple foods you should keep on hand for making smoothies; some of these are obvious, but some you might not have thought about before.
1. Leafy Greens
Leafy greens like spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They add a nutritious boost to your smoothies, and the benefit is that much of their veggie flavor is disguised by other ingredients in your smoothie.
2. Fruits
Fresh or frozen fruits like berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), green apples, and grapefruit are great options for smoothies. One oft over looked fruit that is excellent for smoothies is the avocado. Packed with fiber, potassium, and healthy fat, avocado gives your smoothies a milk-shake like texture. Be sure to stick to Kaufmann Diet-approved fruits in your smoothies.
3. Yogurt
Yogurt is an excellent source of probiotics, protein, and calcium. Good options for yogurt include, greek, goat, and full fat varieties of yogurt. Always opt for plain, unflavored varieties.
4. Nut Butter
Pretty much any nut butter other than those made with peanuts or pistachios is on the table. There are many varieties of nut butters, including, almond, cashew, walnut, etc. These can provide healthy fats, protein, and a creamy texture to your smoothie.
5. Seeds
Seeds are an excellent source of nutrition. Chia seeds, flax seeds, and hemp seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. They can thicken your smoothie and add a pleasant texture.
7. Protein Powder
Adding a high-quality protein powder, whether whey or plant-based, can help you meet your protein needs, especially if you’re using smoothies as a meal replacement or for post-workout recovery. Make sure your protein powders do not include any un-permitted sweeteners or ingredients for the Kaufmann Diet.
8. Kaufmann Diet approved Sweeteners
These include stevia and xylitol. A small amount of honey can be enjoyed on The Kaufmann Two Diet.
9. Spices and Herbs
Add flavor and additional health benefits with ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, or fresh herbs like mint and basil.
