I received a one-year Bible course from my family for Christmas this year. 2 months into it, I will tell you that I used to think I knew The Bible pretty well. I now must confess, I am a student who is learning more and more, even as it relates to my diet! A case in point has to do with Genetically Modified Foods, or GMO’s.
Why would anyone want to genetically engineer the seeds of a food, other than to patent that variant and make money on it? Most food industry people, like those in the FDA, say there is nothing harmful about eating genetically modified food. Harm is relative. We may be more harmed than we know when complying to man’s process of changing the FDA of our foods. One night a few weeks ago, I studied the Book of Genesis. Genesis 1:29 introduces nourishment for man, Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. But before that introduction, we were taught the importance of God’s food preparation for us.
Genesis 1:11, and 1:12 covers the proper seed-based foods for man to eat. The emphasis is placed not on the food itself, but God’s preparation of that food.
1:11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.”
1:12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.
This book I study foretells the future. Why was it that Moses repeated the importance of having food with seed in it according to its like kind?
What’s wrong with eating a green apple that looks like and tastes like a green apple? God gave his companion man free food to eat. He saw that it was good. He undoubtedly knew that man would one day find a way to change His perfect genetic designs in people, puppies, and plants, and therefore to control and profit from it. By genetically engineering the seeds of plant foods, man now controls his own design and the price of selling that design to those who will trust him. Our physiology is uniquely designed by The Creator to eat foods with plant bearing seeds of like kind. GMO foods defy that definition, and that is reason enough for us to think carefully before consuming GMO foods.
