Doug Kaufmann and others have written that a good diet can reduce the effects of Candida overgrowth in the intestines. A recent Serbian study reported that following a good diet can reduce the risk of Candida-related health problems 1. This study treated patients with chronic intestinal Candida Overgrowth with 10 days of nystatin (1,000,000 IU, three times a day for 10 days).

Some continued their usual diet, while others were told to follow a diet which eliminatesalcohol, refined sugars, fruit juice, and sweet fruit, cured meats, vinegar, refined grains like white flower and white rice, and milk/ milk products except for yogurt. This diet includes lots of vegetables, whole grains, fish, chicken, and yogurt. The sugar-free patient group also received supplements of omega 3,6, and 9 fats including evening primrose oil, a multivitamin capsule with selenium, and zinc drops.

The sugar and alcohol-free diet significantly reduced health symptoms and significantly reduced stool Candida levels. After 3 months, Candida overgrowth symptoms were seen in 15% (12/80) of patients following the sugar-free diet but in 57.5% (23/40) of those eating a standard diet (p<0.001). After 3 months, high stool levels of Candida (>104 colonies per gram of stool) were seen in 11.3% (9/80) of the patients following the sugar-free diet and in 42.5% (17/40) of those eating a standard diet (p<0.001).
