Yogurt is one of the few dairy products included on The Kaufmann Diet; it comes with an array of health promoting properties:

Probiotics

Yogurt is a rich source of probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut microbiome. These probiotics, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, support digestive health, aid in nutrient absorption, and help maintain a balanced gut flora. These are particularly important for those on The Kaufmann Diet, because maintaining a healthy gut flora is critical to preventing fungal and yeast overgrowth in the body. 

Protein

Yogurt is a high-quality protein source, crucial for muscle growth, repair, and overall body function. It is especially valuable for those looking to maintain or build muscle mass.

Nutrient-Rich

Yogurt contains various essential nutrients, including vitamins like B2, B12, and minerals like phosphorus and potassium, contributing to overall health and well-being

 

As a result, including yogurt in your diet is known to be beneficial for a number of facets of health:

  • Bone Health: Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium, a mineral essential for maintaining strong bones and preventing osteoporosis. It also contains vitamin D, which aids in calcium absorption, further benefiting bone health.
  • Immune System Support: Probiotics in yogurt can boost the immune system by enhancing the gut’s ability to fend off harmful pathogens and modulate the body’s inflammatory response.

Not all yogurt is created equal, particularly if you are on The Kaufmann Diet. Here is what you should look for when shopping for yogurt on the diet:

  • Look for varieties of yogurt that have no added sugar, flavorings, or colors. Ideally, yogurt should just contain milk and cultures of beneficial bacteria. 
  • Look for live, active cultures in yogurt. These are the bacteria that give yogurt much of its benefits. 
  • Full or low fat? Either are ok on The Kaufmann Diet, full fat is perfectly acceptable. 
  • Goat yogurt is also ok, provided it has live active cultures and no added sugar. 
  • Avoid varieties with pre-added fruit, as these are more likely to contain added sugar.
