The human mouth often contains heavy growth of fungi such as Candida and potentially harmful bacteria such as various species of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Growth of Candida and various bacteria in the mouth has been linked to oral health problems such as gingivitis and dental cavities.
Several studies have reported that adding probiotic bacteria like Lactobacillus may be helpful in reducing mouth levels of Candida and pathogenic bacteria. A recent Croatian study reported that probiotic bacteria containing Lactobacillus paracasei and Lactobacillus acidophilus significantly reduced growth of Candida albicans and Streptococcus salivarius.
Another study reported that an oral probiotic containing Bacillus subtilis R0179 significantly reduced growth of Candida albicans parapsilosis. Further research is needed to develop probiotic containing mouthwashes, toothpastes, and oral supplements.
