Fasting simply implies purposefully giving something up for a specific period of time, in this case food. Usually, this simply implies giving up food for longer than the usual time between meals. The length of time of a fast can be as short as fasting for one meal, but fasts can also last much longer, for days or even weeks. Fasting is typically an act that carries with it some sort of religious or spiritual connotation, but fasting can actually be a very useful health tool, particularly for those using the Kaufmann 1 or Two Diet as a method of losing weight or killing yeasts.

There is some evidence to support the idea that intermittent fasting, or abstaining from food all together, can have beneficial effects on metabolism. This means fasting for approximately a day, or two at the most. Some studies show that metabolic rates increases during the first 36-48 hours, but positive effects on metabolism diminish after that. Subsequently, this may be beneficial for those trying to lose weight. If you are on the Kaufmann 1 Diet and your weight loss has plateaued, intermittent fasting may be a good way to try to kickstart your weight loss again.

(Please do not confuse intermittent fasting with self starvation. If you are dealing with an eating disorder, please see a licensed healthcare professional.)

For some, fasting means giving up all food and drink (except water) for a specific period of time. But fasting must not necessarily mean the abstinence from all food. One popular way to fast is a known as a juice fast, where one abstains from all solid food in favor of nutrient-dense, fresh-squeezed juice. The goal of this is to flood the body with nutrients and encourage detoxification. Juicing lots of chlorophyl-rich greens cain aid in this process, helping chelate heavy metals and other toxins (including mycotoxins) out of the body. One of the benefits to juice fasting is that you are not going completely without sustenance.

Juice fasting with anti-fungal foods, such as garlic, greens and carrots may be a good strategy for those on The Kaufmann 1 or Two Diet. This can help rid the body of pathogenic yeasts and fungi. Supplement with non-soluble fiber, such as psyllium hulls, to help sweep wastes out of the gut, and follow with a loading dose of probiotics to aid in recolonizing the terrain of the gut.

While fasting can be a valuable tool that you can utilize for your health’s advantage, it can also have some very serious health implications and should not be done without a doctor’s consent and supervision. Be sure to get clearance from your licensed healthcare professional before beginning a fast, particularly if you suffer from any health conditions or are on any medications.
