Staying hydrated is key for health; not only does staying hydrated support health and vitality, it is critical for staying alive. To that end, most of the time, plain water does most of the heavy lifting. You are encouraged to drink half your body weight in ounces per day, or more, given your physical activity levels. And, on the Kaufmann Diet, you are encouraged to primarily stick to water, with a few exceptions to the rule. Sports drinks often come with added sugar and coloring agents; nature has a better solution: Coconut Water. When it comes to hydration, however, there are some other factors at play.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes are important for maintaining proper bodily function, as they play a vital role in various physiological processes. These charged ions, such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium, facilitate electrical impulses across cell membranes, regulate fluid balance, and support muscle contractions and nerve impulses.
Electrolytes, however, can get lost through sweating and physical activity; this is why sports drinks are often fortified with electrolytes.
These kinds of drinks, however, often come with added sugar, flavorings and coloring agents… all things you ideally would want to avoid. But fortunately, there is a natural alternative.
Coconut Water
Coconut water is a natural electrolyte-rich beverage, making it an excellent choice for rehydrating the body. It contains essential electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium, which help replenish fluids lost through sweating and exertion. Due to its electrolyte content, coconut water is often used as a natural sports drink to help replenish fluids and electrolytes during and after exercise.
Unlike manmade sports drinks, coconut water contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is a good source of vitamin C, calcium, and manganese, which support immune function, bone health, and metabolism. In addition to its rehydration properties, some studies suggest that coconut water may have a beneficial effect on digestive health. It contains natural enzymes that aid in digestion and may help soothe the digestive tract.
Potassium, is a standout component of coconut water, and is a nutrient many people do not get enough of. It is a key electrolyte found in coconut water, and it plays a critical role in maintaining heart health. Consuming foods rich in potassium, like coconut water, may help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Coconut water may not be an every-day beverage on your Kaufmann Diet, but if you are active and sweating a lot, it can be a valuable addition to your refrigerator. It is a good source of a lot of valuable nutrition.
