With all the advantages modern living affords us, certain fixtures of our world make living our healthiest lives very difficult. Many things that people take for granted or unknowingly consume or participate in can ruin our health; being aware of these things can help you avoid some of the health pitfalls they might encourage. Here are 6 things that ruin your health.
Sugary Beverages
Sugar sweetened beverages, including soft drinks, sodas, juices and other beverages constitute one of the most prevalent ways Americans get added sugar into their diet. These are nutritionally void while putting us at risk for diseases like diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer. Particularly if you are on The Kaufmann Diet, stick to fresh water as your main source of hydration.
Processed Foods
Processed foods are usually high in salt, sugar, preservatives, and often made with other unhealthy ingredients. These foods often comprise the bulk of people’s diets and represent everything from prepackaged snack foods, to frozen dinners, to candy, and any other number of foods resembling nothing that actually comes from the earth. Heavily processed foods are closely correlated with obesity and downstream diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Moldy Foods
Less commonly implicated are foods which are known to be contaminated with mold and their poisons. These foods include corn products (i.e., corn syrup, starch, corn itself, etc.) grains, peanuts, soy products and others. Mold poisons can cause serious illness yet we know these poisons contaminate many of the foods that people eat every day.
Too Much Screen Time
Too much screen time is known to negatively impact mental health, but before even unpacking the problems with too much time spent on social media, screen time interferes with another important aspect of health––our sleep. It is vitally important to get between 7-9 hours of sleep every night, but often hours of shuteye are sabotaged by mindless scrolling on devices. The downstream effects of not getting enough sleep on a regular basis can wreak havoc on our health.
Sedentary Lifestyle
Our bodies are designed to move, and when they don’t, our health can suffer. Modern life makes it too easy to sit around, sit in our office, sit in our cars, and generally exert as little physical effort as possible.
Stress
The impacts of high stress lifestyle are only beginning to be understood, but even as we learn what the implications of stressful lifestyle are, the verdict is already becoming clear; stress puts our body in a poor position to fight off sickness and disease, and can even facilitate the development of certain disease. The fast-paced, overly stressed out world most of us live in can wreck our health over the long term and pave the way for disease.
