5 Steps To Relieve Holiday Stress

Not everyone “loves” the holidays. You may feel pressure to spend money you don’t have during the gift-giving time of year. You may be the one who is called on to make everyone else’s holiday special. You may simply be sad for no apparent reason.

If you’re stressed, lonely, anxious, or even in mourning, the holidays can have a strange way of magnifying the negativity.

I don’t want to exacerbate the problem; I want to help you solve it. Here are a few ways to help discourage the negative effects of holiday-related pressure so you can have a happy, healthy holiday:

ADJUST YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Take a breath and get away from it all, even if it’s for a few minutes. The hustle and bustle of holiday goings-on can cause us to feel an unnecessary sense of pressure.

Maybe it’s time to get in a quiet place, pray, meditatively reflect on what’s really important, and shed everything that is creating artificial pressure. Stop feeling as if everything depends on you, and you alone, or that everything has to be flawless. It doesn’t.

LET GO AND LET GOD

This is a phrase that many of us need to be reminded of. We all want to feel like we’re in control…but oftentimes, we’re not. Maybe what we need is to just say, “I can’t do it all, myself; but You can!”

Some people call this “surrender”. It’s just a sense of releasing what you can’t control, and focusing on what you can do.

There’s a book from the 90’s, and I love the title: “All You Can Do Is All You Can Do, But All You Can Do Is Enough”.

So do what you can. It’s enough.

TAKE SOME TIME TO REJUVENATE

You may think that exercise will only add to your already-full schedule. But there’s a rejuvenating feeling that exercise can provide.

For many people, exercise not only helps relieve stress, it can also make them more resistant to stress-related symptoms. This means that their bodies and minds can actually withstand more stimuli if they exercise than they could if they didn’t make exercise a normal part of their routine.

Finding time to exercise may feel selfish, but it’s really not. You can do more and serve better when you’re at your best than if you’re sluggish and worn out.

FUEL UP!

I’ve already been guilty of indulging in holiday treats. And some of that is fun and mostly harmless.

But if you’ve found yourself going too hard on the Christmas candy and sweets, it’s possible that your feelings of stress are the natural side effect.

Kaufmann’s Kaufmann 1 is your go-to diet, and that goes for holidays, too. Think of it as your refueling station. Fill up with high octane Kaufmann-friendly foods and snacks, and say No to most of the junk you’re tempted by. I PROMISE you’ll feel more equipped to handle holiday stress if you keep the sugar away.

HERBS AND SPICES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Feeling stressed? Maybe you should treat yourself to some herbal stocking stuffers.

How about some Rhodiola, holy basil, or ashwagandha? These are “adaptogenic” herbs, which means that they help your body adapt to outside stressors.

Curcumin is the primary active ingredient in the spice, turmeric. In addition to being antifungal, it’s an outstanding anti-inflammatory. Stress can create horrible inflammatory effects, and sugar can encourage fungal overgrowth. Curcumin is a great shield against both.

L-theanine may be the unsung hero of green tea. It’s an amino acid that helps dial down the stress on a number of different levels. It can even help change brain wave patterns from a stress-heavy pattern to one of calm relaxation.

So….we know that the holidays have their own pressures. But take time to relieve the pressure with these simple steps.

From all of us at Know the Cause, have a happy, healthy holiday!
