Instead of the foods that are staples of most people’s diet, such as breads, pastas, cereals, potatoes, sweet foods and other foods high in sugar, The Kaufmann Diet encourages, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, lots of vegetables and a limited variety of fruits. So if you like steaks, chicken or salmon, you will likely enjoy your options on The Kaufmann Diet; The Kaufmann Diet is a great diet for the carnivores among us, because meat is encouraged on the diet however there are some types of meat to avoid.

Most meats are high in protein and virtually void of sugar or carbohydrates; this is key when you are trying to limit your intake of carbs overall with the goal of eliminating pathogenic fungi or yeasts. Sugar and simple carbs are exactly the kinds of foods that allow these organisms to thrive, and if you are both consuming foods high in sugar regularly and have a problem with yeast, you are only adding fuel to the fire. 

When these foods are eliminated, however, people often report relief from symptoms and health problems that have plagued them for years, and many lose significant weight effortlessly. 

However, while steaks, chicken, pork and many other kinds of meat are encouraged on the diet,  this does not mean that any and all kinds of meats are ok. Like many foods in our industrialized food system, some meat and meat products contain ingredients you should seek to avoid. In particular, there are 4 types of meat to avoid while shopping for The Kaufmann Diet. 

Lunch Meats

Lunch meats and deli meats are convenient, readily available and would often seem like a good option for The Kaufmann Diet, but the problem is that these are often made using foods like sugar, wheat and a myriad of preservatives like sodium nitrite you should seek to avoid. 

Cured Meats

Meats that are cured and aged––such as bacon––often contain sugar or other ingredients you should avoid while on The Kaufmann Diet. The high salt content of these types of meat might be a concern for some people. These also run more risk for fungal contamination than other meats. 

Meats Raised With Hormones and Antibiotics

On The Kaufmann Diet, antibiotics should be avoided unless absolutely necessary; why, then, would you want to consume them in the meat you eat? Hormones, too, can exacerbate underlying fungal problems. There is some evidence that meat coming from animals grown using hormones and antibiotics might contain residual amounts of these drugs in the fat. Look for cuts of meat that have been raised without the use of antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic can be a good option in this regard, but is not always necessary. 

Heavily Processed Meats

These are meats like sausages and some other types of meat products, like some jerkies. These are often packed with sugar or other ingredients not permitted on the diet. 

It is important to remember to always read the labels on any meat products you are purchasing; it is equally as important to remember that products that come without labels––such as lean cuts of meat straight from the butcher––are often the best products suited for your diet!
