Why You Should Eat Pili Nuts

Pili Nuts

Pili nuts are a type of nut native to Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. They come from the pili tree (Canarium ovatum), which produces elongated, almond-shaped nuts. Pili nuts are known for their rich, buttery flavor and are often compared to macadamia nuts in terms of taste and texture.

These nuts are typically eaten raw or roasted and can be incorporated into various dishes such as salads, desserts, and savory dishes. They are a great option for snacks since they are portable and require no special container. They are also used to produce pili nut oil, which is valued for its health benefits and culinary uses.

Pili nuts have become more popular in recent years in the United States, largely due to their high nutritional content. They’re rich in nutrition, including healthy fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Pili nuts offer several potential health benefits due to their nutritional profile:

Healthy Fats: These nuts are rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which is known for its heart-health benefits. These fats may help reduce bad cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol) and lower the risk of heart disease.

Protein: Like many nuts, pili nuts are high in protein, which is essential for building and repairing tissues in the body. Including protein-rich foods like nuts in your diet can help support muscle growth and repair.

Vitamins and Minerals: Pili nuts are a good source of various vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and vitamin E. These nutrients play important roles in bone health, energy production, and antioxidant defense.

Antioxidants: These nuts contain antioxidants, such as vitamin E and flavonoids, which help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Antioxidants can help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Low Carbohydrate/High Fiber: Pili nuts are low in carbohydrates, making them suitable for low-carb diets like The Kaufmann Diet. Pili nuts however, also contain dietary fiber, which is important for digestive health. Fiber helps promote regular bowel movements, prevent constipation, and  perhaps most importantly, supports a healthy gut microbiome. The combination of healthy fats, protein, and fiber can help promote feelings of fullness and satiety.
