Generally, any type of sugar or sweetener is not allowed on The Kaufmann Diet; the reason is that sugar is pathogenic yeast and fungi’s preferred source of fuel. So while honey is a more natural sweetener, it is a sweetener nonetheless, and particularly while you are on Kaufmann One, even honey should likely be eliminated from your diet.
Kaufmann Two makes some allowances for foods, however, honey, and in particular, Manuka honey, is one of them.
Manuka honey is a special type of honey that is produced by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, which is native to New Zealand. What sets Manuka honey apart from other types of honey is its unique antimicrobial properties.
These antimicrobial properties make Manuka honey highly valued for its potential health benefits, including wound healing, sore throat relief, and digestive health.
Manuka honey is graded based on its Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), which measures its potency and antibacterial strength. The higher the UMF rating, the more potent the honey is believed to be.
Manuka honey is associated with several potential health benefits, primarily due to its unique properties and rich nutritional profile. Some of the key health benefits attributed to Manuka honey include:
Wound Healing: Manuka honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for wound healing. Its antimicrobial properties help prevent infections and promote the healing process. It’s often used in medical settings for treating burns, cuts, and ulcers.
Sore Throat Relief: The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Manuka honey may help soothe sore throats and alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory infections, such as coughing and throat irritation. Many people consume it by mixing it with warm water or tea.
Digestive Health: Some research suggests that Manuka honey may have benefits for digestive health. It may help alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastritis, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers. Its anti-microbial properties could help inhibit the growth of harmful microbes in the digestive tract.
Immune Support: The antioxidants and antibacterial compounds found in Manuka honey may help support the immune system and protect the body against infections. Regular consumption of Manuka honey may help boost overall immunity.
Dental Health: Manuka honey has been studied for its potential benefits in oral health. Its antibacterial properties may help inhibit the growth of harmful microbes in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
Skin Care: Manuka honey is often used in skincare products due to its moisturizing, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It may help soothe and hydrate the skin, as well as promote wound healing and reduce the appearance of acne and scars.
Antioxidant Properties: Manuka honey contains various antioxidants, including phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants play a crucial role in reducing inflammation and lowering the risk of chronic diseases.
While on The Kaufmann Two Diet, you can enjoy small amounts of Manuka honey as part of your overall diet. Remember to not overdo it, particularly in the beginning. And if at any point you experience the return of symptoms, it is important to switch back to The Kaufmann One Diet.
