As one who has researched prostate cancer, I’ve never understood this exam. Says one article (1) , “Although the Digital Rectal Exam has been used for many years, whether it actually decreases the number of deaths from prostate cancer has not been determined.” Wouldn’t you think this would have been thoroughly investigated 100 years ago before imposing it on many millions of men?
The article apprised the reader that both a Digital Rectal Exam and a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is not even prostate specific as pregnant woman can have elevated PSA test results, offers more accurate prostate cancer results. I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Dr Richard Ablin, the man who discovered the PSA molecule in 1970, the year I was in Vietnam. His book, The Great Prostate Hoax, is one of the best gifts any woman could give to the men (husband, sons, grandsons) in her life.
Be careful out there, because there are many reasons men urinate at night. Please know that I’m not attempting to dissuade you from going to a doctor. I just want you to know the important questions to ask before the biopsies begin. PS…fungal prostatitis is very well documented, so that may be a good place to start with your doctor.
