The medical website, Medscape.com reports (1):
“Fewer than half of the cancer drugs approved under the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) accelerated approval pathway between 2013 and 2017 have been shown to improve overall survival or quality of life, despite being on the US market for more than 5 years…”
As though this information alone may not shock us enough, the drug companies that petition the FDA for fast-track approval pay huge amounts of money to the FDA for their new drug investigation. Each company can spend a million dollars or more getting their drug in front of an FDA investigator.
In 2021, C. Michael White asked:
“Why is the FDA Funded in Part by the Companies It Regulates?”
What a great question!
Sadly, it seems that everyone except the patients, prosper from what looks like a pay-to-play game. In my opinion, this represents just one more reason to take very good care of your health before a doctor recommends one of these new, and highly questionable drugs. Be careful out there! This isn’t 1960!
