Imagine buying a new car that was so poorly built and dangerous to drive, that it was known to cause 1,739 horrific accidents, which within the first 6 months of ownership, killed 473 of those who owned the car. Would you buy it?
In trying to assess the liver toxicity associated with 194 commonly prescribed medications at VA Hospitals, researchers discovered that 17 medications were particularly toxic to the liver (1). The research team “identified 1,739 hospitalizations for severe acute liver injury…recorded within the first 2 days of admission. Of these patients, 27.2% died within 180 days of hospitalization, and five patients underwent a liver transplant.”
“Seven of the 17 medications — stavudine, erlotinib (Tarceva), lenalidomide (Revlimid) or thalidomide, chlorpromazine, metronidazole, prochlorperazine (Compazine), and isoniazid — were found to be the most hepatotoxic… The other 10 medications — moxifloxacin, azathioprine, levofloxacin, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, fluconazole, captopril, amoxicillin-clavulanate, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and ciprofloxacin.”
You recognize some of these, don’t you? Antibiotics and Antifungals make up most of these medications. Sometimes these are important and lifesaving, but just as too many cooks spoil the broth, too many medications spoil health.
