Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin produced by several common species of Fusarium fungi (mold). DON frequently contaminates stored grains. DON is also known as vomitoxin since it can induce vomiting in people and animals who eat DON contaminated grain.

DON may also play a role in breakdown of intestinal wall integrity- which is commonly referred to as “leaky gut syndrome”.
Significantly increased intestinal permeability is commonly seen in people with many health conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory colitis, celiac disease (gluten allergy), and asthma.

Consumption of DON in contaminated grains may play a role in development of increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut. A Dutch study reported that exposure to a fairly low dose (1.39 µM) of DON disintegrates a layer of cultured human colon cells in less than one hour. In laboratory mice, oral exposure to DON (25 mg/Kg) was associated with significantly greater intestinal permeability.
