How Do You Feed Your Pets a Healthy Diet?

The health of your pets, much like your own health, is contingent upon a healthy diet and exercise. Dog and cats have different nutritional requirements than humans, and much of the food that may contribute to good health in people might harm your pet; the best source of dietary information for your pets, including foods you should never give animals, can be obtained from your veterinarian.

There is one recommendation that might be wise to heed: Dog and cat food is often high in grains and/or corn products. Grains and corn, according to Dr. Ruth Etzel MD, are commonly and universally contaminated with mycotoxins, respectively. We talk quite a bit here at Know the Cause about the effect these dangerous poisons can have on our health. Doug Kaufmann has linked mycotoxin exposure to multiple diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

While mycotoxins and fungal diseases aren’t factors that physicians often consider, farmers and veterinarians are likely more familiar with them and their virulent effects. Fungus and mycotoxins pose a huge threat to crops and livestock, and ignoring their effects can cost farmers quite a bit of money. Mycotoxins in feed have been associated with a number of health problems in animals, ranging from infertility all the way to death.

Knowing that mycotoxin contamination is a risk with foods stored in a silo (as grains and corn are), it may be best for you to purchase pet foods that do not contain these foods. Other things to look for would be organic pet food. If pesticides are something you feel should be avoided, the same rules likely apply for your pets. Pet food free of chemical preservatives is a good idea, as well. Often, your local health food store will carry healthy products for your pets.

Pets are not exempt from the wisdom inherent in the saying “You are what you eat.” A balanced diet along with an appropriate amount of exercise is vital to your pet experiencing wellness and vitality. Be sure to check with your vet before making any changes to your pet’s regimen.
