I so dislike seeking information on medical websites, like cancer.gov, komen.org and heart.org. Imagine the industry funds that pour into these organizations, yet the “donate” pop-ups begin the second one logs on. Seems their first goal is money and look where that has gotten them. I digress…
Drinking alcohol is linked to several different types of cancer and is thought to cause cardiovascular disease, although causal data seems to be scarce.
“A clear link between excessive alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been established, but no consensus exists on the effects of moderate alcohol consumption on CVD. After nearly a century of research on the effects of alcohol consumption on cardiovascular health, we find ourselves running in circles, asking the same questions and reporting the same limitations. To move forward and gain greater insight into the health effects of limited alcohol consumption, a reconsideration of the standard of evidence is needed (1).”
Educational disease websites all seem to say the exact same thing about alcohol consumption. If you drink, drink in moderation. That sounds plausible, until they define the word “moderation.” Females should drink only one glass of wine daily and men, no more than two 12oz beers daily. Again, seemingly plausible. What harm could a glass of wine cause? Then I did the math.
Women, drink no more than 58 bottles (more than one bottle weekly) of wine annually, and men stop when you’ve drunk 68 gallons of beer annually. WOW! In my opinion, never has such a great short essay on alcohol ever been penned (2)!
