Fruit Has Many Benefits, But Enjoy With Caution

 

It is conventional wisdom to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and not without reason; this is where you will find an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients necessary for sustaining optimal health. Most people do not get enough of these nutrients in their diet, because most people do not eat enough fruit or veggies. These nutrients are concentrated in fruits and vegetables; no doubt these types of food should comprise the bulk of what we are eating. 

 

Hardly a day goes by that a study is not released touting the beneficial nutrients in the fruit. Like vegetables, fruits contain a broad spectrum of health-promoting compounds, many of which are unique to individual fruits. Truly there is not a lot of bad things to say about including a lot of fruit in your diet, yet The Kaufmann Diet seeks to limit the amount and variety of fruit that people include. 

 

This is because, despite being packed full of nutrition, fruit is inherently much higher in sugar than vegetables are. 

 

Now, fruits are not high in sugar the way a cupcake is, perhaps. In addition to sugar, fruits also contain fiber, which in some ways mitigates the effects of sugar, at least from the perspective of spiking insulin. Cupcakes, too, are not known for being high in health-promoting nutrients, so equivocating a banana to a cupcake is not really fair. 

 

However, when your goal is eliminating pathogenic yeasts and fungi, these parasites do not necessarily differentiate between sucrose (table sugar in a cupcake) or fructose (the “natural” sugar found in fruit). Unfortunately, it is all the same to them. For this reason, The Kaufmann Diet limits the amount of fruit on the diet. 

 

There are some fruits, however that are encouraged on the Kaufmann Diet, largely because they are low in sugar yet remain high in nutrition. Generally, these are the fruits you should keep in your diet when you are on an anti-fungal diet:

 

– Lemons

– Limes

– Grapefruit

– Green Apples

– Berries (blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, tart cherries)

– Avocado

– Tomatoes

– Fresh coconut 

 

This is a short list, but each fruit on the list is packed with nutrition and is low in sugar.

On the other hand, it is important to avoid most other fruits, including:

 

– Melons (watermelon, cantaloupe)

– Pineapple

– Red Apples (and other varieties)

– Oranges (including clementines, blood oranges, nectarines, etc.)

– Bananas 

– Peaches

– Pears

– Grapes

– Dates

 

The Kaufmann 2 Diet and Fruit

As you graduate to the less restrictive phase of the diet, known as Kaufmann 2, you are encouraged to begin adding fruits back into your diet in moderation. Often, it is best to enjoy a serving of fruit, and then wait to see if any symptoms arise. Base moderate continuation on that. Still, it is best to avoid fruits like melons, dates, and bananas, as these are some of the fruits with the highest sugar content. It is best to avoid dried fruits altogether, as these are more likely to affected by fungal contamination.
